Jet lag in a nutshell

Before we dive into the details, let’s take a look at what jet lag actually is. In short, jet lag occurs when your body can’t adapt to the new time zone as quickly as you can. The internal biological clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, gets out of sync, which can lead to fatigue, insomnia and general malaise.

A personal example

To make the whole thing more tangible, we would like to tell you about our own experience.

We recently flew from Germany to New York and struggled with the effects of jet lag. The first few days felt like someone had pulled the plug. The usual energy was gone, and sleep came when it wasn’t supposed to. But after a few trips, we learned how to deal with jet lag:

Our tips

to avoid jet lag

Adjust your sleep schedule before traveling:

A few days before departure, try to gradually adjust your sleep schedule to the time zone of your destination. This makes it easier to adjust your biological clock

Stay hydrated:

Dehydration exacerbates the effects of jet lag. Drink enough water, especially during the flight, to keep your body fit.

Take advantage of natural light

As soon as you arrive at your destination, try to get used to daylight as quickly as possible. This helps to adjust your internal clock.

Power naps:

Short naps of 20-30 minutes can work wonders to combat fatigue without disrupting your sleep-wake cycle.

A relaxed start to your vacation

The good news is that jet lag is not an insurmountable obstacle. With a little preparation and the right strategies, you can minimize the effects and enjoy your trip right from the start.
