What is an ETA and who needs it?
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital travel document that facilitates entry into the United Kingdom. It will become mandatory for many countries, including citizens of the European Union. The application is completed online and linked to a biometric passport.
January 8, 2025: Launch for citizens of select non-EU countries
March 5, 2025: EU citizens can begin applying.
April 2, 2025: Mandatory for all travelers requiring an ETA.

Citizens of the following countries require an ETA:
Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Hong Kong SAR (including British Overseas Territories), Israel, Japan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Macao SAR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Oman, Palau, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Taiwan (if you have a passport issued by Taiwan that contains the number of the identity card issued by the competent authority in Taiwan), Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United States, Uruguay

Other nationalities cannot obtain an ETA. Check whether you need a visa instead.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for an ETA
Currently, the ETA application can only be submitted through a dedicated mobile app, which is available exclusively in English. This may change after March 5.
Important: You will need a valid passport with a chip, identifiable by the chip symbol on the front cover.![]()
The application process is only possible with such a biometric passport.
The application fee is £10 (approximately €12 or $12). Processing can take up to 72 hours (3 days), and confirmation will be sent to the email address you provide. The ETA is valid for 2 years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first.

- Scan Passport: Upload a photo of the first page and read the chip data.

- Take a Selfie: Ensure a neutral background and no shadows.
- Enter Address: Provide your primary residence. Avoid using special characters.
- Provide Employment Information: Include your job title and employer.
- Criminal History: Declare any criminal record if applicable.

After completing the application, you will receive a confirmation email.
